WHAT WE'RE TEACHING

SHAMELESS

SESSION:

Week 3

BOTTOM LINE:

Choose to change you.

SUMMARY:

Admit it: there’s something satisfying about watching someone else’s cringe-worthy moment. When a celebrity face plants on stage at a concert or someone slips up and says something stupid on TV, we’re all watching and re-watching those moments for a good laugh (thanks, Internet). Those kinds of laughs seem harmless; after all, we don’t even know those people! But if we’re being honest, we could all probably say we’ve done the same thing to people we actually do know—our friends, our family, the people at school we don’t necessarily like. Maybe we didn’t mean to at first, but sometimes we move from teasing and mocking what someone did to teasing and mocking who someone is. That’s shaming other people and, whether we want to admit it or not, we’re all guilty of it. But is that really the way we want to live? Is that really how we want to make other people feel? One thing’s for sure: it’s definitely not the way God wants us to live! But rather than just tell us what He doesn’t want us to do, Jesus takes it a step further and gives us instructions on exactly what He wants us to do when it comes to the way we treat other people. And if we can apply it to our own lives, we’ll find that while we may not be able to change what other people do, we can definitely change the way we treat them.

THINK ABOUT THIS

HOW TO MAKE GOOD MEMORIES WITHOUT GRUMPY SIDE EFFECTS

We wanted to be the fun parents. And to create memories. I wanted us to be able to look fondly back on weekends like this and hear my kids say things like, “Thank you!” “That was awesome!” I didn’t want us to be grumpy and short with each other. But with so much “fun” planned, we started running on less and less, our fuses getting shorter and shorter until it didn’t matter what we were doing. We were too exhausted to enjoy it.

And that’s when it hit me. When it comes to making memories, my kids are cataloguing more than the experience itself. They are taking note of the emotions that come along with them.
